If you’re researching AI training for yourself or your team, you’ve probably noticed that pricing is hard to find and hard to compare. Vendors either don’t publish prices or quote “contact us for a custom proposal.” This post gives you honest benchmarks so you can evaluate options with clear expectations.

The Range: What AI Training Actually Costs in NZ

AI training in New Zealand ranges from free (DIY resources) to $50,000+ (enterprise-wide transformation programmes). Here’s how the market breaks down:

Free and Low-Cost: $0 – $200

YouTube, LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, and platform-specific tutorials cover the basics. If you’re an individual wanting to get started, there is no shortage of free content.

What you get: Broad conceptual knowledge, platform-specific tutorials, self-paced learning.

What you don’t get: Application to your specific role or industry. Accountability. A clear pathway. Practical workflow integration. NZ-specific context (most free content is US or UK focused).

Best for: Self-motivated learners who are comfortable figuring things out independently and have time to filter good content from mediocre.

Individual Online Courses: $200 – $800

Structured online programmes from platforms like Coursera, Udemy, or specialist AI training providers. Typically 4-20 hours of content, self-paced, with exercises and sometimes a certificate.

What you get: Structure, curated content, a certificate for your profile, accountability via course completion.

What you don’t get: Live instruction, real-time feedback, application to your specific context, or NZ-specific regulatory/business context.

Best for: Individuals who want a structured credential and are comfortable with self-directed online learning.

AI Roadmap Workshop: $800 – $1,500

A structured diagnostic session with an AI specialist — typically 60-120 minutes — that maps your current AI use, identifies your highest-leverage opportunities, and produces a prioritised action plan.

What you get: A clear picture of where you stand. Specific recommendations for your situation. A 90-day roadmap you can actually follow. Often the most valuable single investment if you’re serious about AI.

Our offering: The Gen AI Training AI Roadmap Workshop is $1,500 + GST. It includes a 90-minute structured session, a written assessment of your current AI use and gaps, tool recommendations for your specific context, and a 90-day implementation roadmap.

Best for: Business owners and team leaders who want a clear starting point rather than figuring it all out themselves. Also useful before investing in team training — you’ll know exactly what to train on.

Team Workshop or Half-Day Training: $1,500 – $5,000

A facilitated session (3-4 hours) for a team of 5-20 people. Typically covers AI fundamentals, hands-on practice with key tools, and specific applications to the team’s workflows.

What you get: Live facilitation, hands-on practice, team-specific examples, Q&A. Everyone leaves with practical capability they can use immediately.

What you don’t get: Depth on any one area. Follow-through — a workshop is a starting point, not a complete training programme.

Price factors: Team size, customisation required, travel (Christchurch-based delivery is lower cost than Auckland for CHCH providers), half-day vs full-day.

Best for: Teams that are AI-curious and need a practical introduction that gets everyone to the same baseline.

Full-Day or Multi-Session Team Programme: $3,000 – $15,000

A structured training programme delivered over one or more days, with deeper content, more hands-on practice, and typically more customisation to the team’s specific workflows and tools.

What you get: Real depth. Custom content built around your actual workflows. Skills that stick because you’ve practised them properly. Often includes follow-up support.

What you don’t get: Ongoing coaching or the kind of culture change that requires embedding practice over time.

Best for: Teams of 5-30 people where AI adoption is a genuine priority and one-time training will be followed by consistent practice.

Enterprise AI Capability Programme: $15,000 – $100,000+

Organisation-wide AI transformation — strategy, change management, training across multiple teams, governance frameworks, tool implementation. Typically delivered by large consulting firms or specialist AI transformation providers.

What you get: Comprehensive coverage. Embedded support. Change management. Executive alignment.

What you don’t get: Speed or simplicity. Enterprise programmes take months and require significant internal resource.

Best for: Organisations of 100+ people where AI adoption is a board-level priority and significant investment is both available and appropriate.

What to Look for Beyond Price

Price is one dimension. These questions matter at least as much:

  • Is it NZ-specific? AI training built for US or UK contexts misses NZ regulatory requirements (Privacy Act, ERA, RMA), NZ business culture, and the specific tools and providers relevant here.
  • Is it practical or conceptual? Conceptual training tells you what AI is. Practical training shows you how to use it for your actual work. You want practical.
  • Is it current? AI moves fast. Training content more than 12 months old may already be significantly outdated.
  • Does the trainer actually use AI? Ask your trainer what AI tools they use daily and what they’ve built with AI recently. If they can’t answer specifically, their training is likely theoretical.
  • What’s the follow-through? A workshop without follow-through produces minimal lasting change. What support is available after the training day?

The ROI Calculation

The right question isn’t “how much does AI training cost?” It’s “what return will this training generate?”

For a team of 5 people at an average fully-loaded cost of $80,000/year ($38/hour), saving 2 hours per week per person is worth:

2 hours × 5 people × 52 weeks × $38/hour = $19,760/year

A $5,000 team training programme that delivers 2 hours/week/person of AI-enabled time saving pays back in about 3 months and returns $14,760 net in year one.

That’s a conservative estimate. Actual time savings are often higher, and quality improvements (better proposals, fewer errors, faster turnaround) add further value that’s harder to quantify.
